01

No equipment

Bodyweight exercises need nothing but floor space and can train every major muscle group. They're the natural starting point for home workouts; you progress by moving to harder variations, adding reps or slowing the tempo. A mat and a sturdy chair or step open up even more options.

02

Free weights

Dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells and plates make you control the path of the load, which also trains balance and coordination. Dumbbells are the easiest place to start and suit home gyms; a barbell lets you lift the most and add weight in the smallest steps. Whatever you use, learn each movement with a light load first.

03

Machines and cables

Machines guide the weight along a fixed path and usually support your back or chest, so they're quick to learn and let you push hard without a spotter. Cable machines sit in between, giving smooth resistance from almost any angle. Cardio machines are listed separately.
