A small weighted ball is an easy way to add load to core exercises such as the Russian twist. It is cheap, compact and suits home workouts.

About the exercise ball

Weighted exercise balls, often called medicine balls, usually range from about 1 to 10 kg. Held at the chest or in front of the body, the ball increases the demand on the core during rotation and crunch movements without the awkward shape of a plate.

02

How to train with it

For the Russian twist, sit with your knees bent, lean back slightly with a long spine and rotate the ball from side to side, turning from the torso. Keep your feet on the floor while you learn it and lift them only when you can stay controlled. Choose a light ball first; speed and range matter more than weight.

03

Choosing exercises

Use an exercise ball to progress bodyweight core work once the unweighted versions feel easy, adding reps before you add weight.
