Isolation calves training

Isolation calves exercises move a single joint, so the calves do most of the work. Use them after your compound lifts, with moderate to high reps and controlled form, to add focused volume. The loads are lighter, so they're a good place to practise a slow lowering phase and a full range of motion, and they add little fatigue to the rest of your workout.

02

How to train the calves

Standing raises, including Smith machine and leg-press versions, emphasise the gastrocnemius; seated raises emphasise the soleus. Use a full range: let the heels drop below the step for a stretch, pause briefly, then rise as high as you can. Calves handle a lot of walking every day, so many people respond well to controlled reps with a pause rather than bouncing.

03

Choosing calves exercises

Include one straight-knee and one bent-knee raise. At home, single-leg standing calf raises on a step with a dumbbell are an effective option.
