GymStreak vs Hevy

Written by the GymStreak coaching teamUpdated

We make GymStreak. Every fact about Hevy comes from its own website, help centre or App Store listing, checked on and linked next to each fact. Features change, so check the apps themselves before you decide. We don’t list prices: they change and vary by country.

The short answer

Hevy is a free, ad-free workout logger with a big social side: you build your own routines or use its free pre-built ones, follow other lifters, and Hevy Pro adds an adaptive programme generator. GymStreak starts from the plan: its AI builds your week from your goal, schedule, equipment and injuries, and it adds food logging and streak-based motivation. But logging workouts in GymStreak needs Premium, and it has no social feed. Choose Hevy for a free logger and a community; choose GymStreak if you want the plan made for you.

01 / Which to choose

Hevy or GymStreak?

Choose Hevy if…

  • You want to log your workouts for free.
  • You like building your own routines, or following popular programmes from a library.
  • You want to follow friends, see their workouts and compare on leaderboards.
  • You train with an iPad, a Wear OS watch or in a web browser.
  • You want CSV export, or you’re moving your history over from Strong.

Choose GymStreak if…

  • You don’t want to write your own programme: the AI builds your weekly plan and you can change it by chatting to the coach.
  • You want training and food tracking in one app.
  • Weekly streaks, XP, gym ranks and quests help you stay consistent.
  • You need a plan that works around injuries or limited equipment, at home or in the gym.

In Hevy’s own words: “Hevy is the most intuitive workout tracker & planner in the world. No ads and free.”Source

03 / Key differences

The key differences

Who writes the plan

In Hevy you plan: you build routines or copy pre-built ones, and Hevy Trainer (Pro) can generate an adaptive programme. In GymStreak the AI writes the plan by default, from your goal, training days, session length, equipment and injuries.

What’s free

Hevy’s free version logs workouts with a few limits (4 routines, 7 custom exercises, 3 months of stats history). GymStreak’s free version shows your AI-built plan, the exercise library and body tracking, but starting and logging workouts needs Premium. If free logging matters most, Hevy is the better pick.

Social

Hevy has a feed, follows, likes, comments and leaderboards among people you follow. GymStreak has share cards for workouts and PRs, but no feed, friends or leaderboards.

Food tracking

GymStreak includes food logging by photo, typed or spoken description or search, with calorie and macro targets (there’s no barcode scanner). Hevy has no food logging.

Devices and data

Hevy also runs on iPad, Wear OS and the web, and exports to CSV. GymStreak runs on iPhone, Apple Watch and Android, and has no CSV import or export.

04 / FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Hevy free?

Yes. Hevy’s free version has no ads and logs workouts, with limits of 4 routines, 7 custom exercises and 3 months of stats history. Hevy Pro removes them and is sold monthly, yearly or as a one-off lifetime purchase.

Is GymStreak free?

GymStreak is free to download, and you can see your AI-built plan and browse the exercise library for free. Starting and logging workouts, the AI coach and AI food logging need GymStreak Premium, an in-app subscription.

Does Hevy make workout plans for you?

Hevy has a free library of pre-built routines, and Hevy Trainer, a Pro feature, generates an adaptive programme and adjusts your working weights. Otherwise you build routines yourself.

Can I move my Hevy history to GymStreak?

Not at the moment. GymStreak doesn’t import CSV files, so your Hevy history would stay in Hevy.

Which is better for beginners?

It depends on what you want. If you’d like a plan built for you, with a demo for every exercise and reminders to stay consistent, GymStreak is designed for that. If you want to start free and follow a well-known beginner routine, Hevy’s free pre-built routines are a good option. Either way, our free beginner gym plan works with any app.
