How many exercises should I do per workout?
Written by the GymStreak coaching teamUpdated
Short answer
Most workouts work well with 4 to 6 exercises: one or two big compound lifts first, then two to four accessories, for 2 to 4 hard sets each. That adds up to roughly 12 to 20 sets, which fits in about an hour. Plan by weekly sets per muscle, not by exercise count: more exercises isn’t automatically better.
01 / Start from sets
Start from weekly sets, not exercises
Muscle growth follows the number of hard sets each muscle gets in a week. A meta-analysis found 10 or more weekly sets per muscle beat fewer, and a later review suggests 12 to 20 for trained lifters. Pick the exercises that deliver those sets; the count follows. This page is about the whole session; for how many different exercises to use for one muscle, see how many exercises per muscle group.
Three exercises can be a complete workout if they cover the muscles you’re training and each gets enough sets. Eight exercises of one set each are usually less useful than four done properly.
02 / By split
How many for your split
| Workout type | Exercises | Typical layout |
|---|---|---|
| Full body, 3 days a week | 5 to 6 | Squat or leg press, hinge, push, pull, plus 1 or 2 arm or core moves |
| Upper/lower, 4 days | 5 to 6 | Two presses, two pulls and 1 or 2 arm moves; or two leg compounds, a hinge, curls or extensions and calves |
| Push/pull/legs | 4 to 6 | One or two big lifts for the day’s muscles, then 2 to 4 accessories |
| 30 minutes | 3 to 4 | Multi-joint lifts, paired as supersets |
| Beginner | 4 to 5 | Simple machine and dumbbell versions, 2 to 3 sets each |
03 / Order
Put them in the right order
Do the big multi-joint lifts first, while you’re fresh, then the single-joint exercises. That’s the order the American College of Sports Medicine’s position stand recommends, because the heaviest, most technical lifts suffer most when you’re tired.

04 / How Spot helps
How Spot helps
Ask Spot for a workout with the number of exercises you want, the time you have and the equipment you can use, and it creates it in your GymStreak plan. If a workout has too few or too many moves, ask it to add or remove an exercise or change the sets.
05 / FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is 3 exercises a workout enough?
It can be, if each muscle you’re training gets enough hard sets over the week. Three multi-joint lifts of 3 or 4 sets each is a solid short session.
Is 10 exercises too many?
For most people, yes. That many usually means few sets per exercise and a long session. Fewer exercises with more hard sets each are easier to progress.
How many sets per exercise?
Two to four hard sets per exercise suits most people; beginners can start with one to three, as position stands suggest.
